It’s been awhile

January 22, 2011

*knock knock*  Anyone out there? It’s been awhile, but I decided to resurrect this blog. SInce the last time I posted (woah…in March), I’ve been pretty busy. I got a full time job, did a little travelling, and I’m now on a roller derby team! But that’s not why you’re here. This is a comic blog, so I’ll talk about comics. ^_^ .

I’ve been reading a bunch of stuff-Izombie, The Brightest Day, The Blackest Night, and all of those tie-ins, The Walking Dead, Fables, and I went to another convention!  A  convention a million times as big as Steel City Con. New York Comic-Con! It was awesome. NYC is my favorite city in the world so I thought a one day ticket to the con would be fine and I’d spend the other days exploring NYC. I really regret that. I wish I had bought a weekend ticket. One day was  not enough to experience NYCC. I walked around for hours and hours and still didn’t see everything. I didn’t go to any panels, just walked around, met some people, played some games, visited booths and bought stuff! I saw some really creative cosplay.

Recognize them all? ^_^

Unfortunately, I didn’t dress up. I, Sophia the princess of procrastination, didn’t finish my costume in time.  Surprise, surprise! Hopefully, it will be perfected before the next con which will be *drumroll* Pax East in Boston. Who’s coming?!

Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love

March 8, 2010

No doubt about it Fables is my favorite comic book series. I was only introduced to it a few years ago, but as soon as I read my first issue I was hooked and caught up as fast as I could! When I heard there was a Cinderella miniseries spin-off, I was a bit hesitant to read it. Why? Well, because I read a few of the Jack of Fables (another Fables spin-off )and hated them so, I thought this would be another disapointment. Wrong! Cinderella is awesome. before it was released the author described it as “It’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ meets ‘Sex in the City,’” and told us that it “would answer the question of what happened to Cinderella’s fairy godmother.” The first four issues of the series built the story up and gave us background on Cinderella, how she got where she is, about her current mission, and introduced us to her allies, including her main squeeze, Aladdin. It’s not until the 5th issue, which I JUST finished reading, that we see the fairy godmother. And what a surprise it was to see her! I definitely wasn’t expecting her to be there…were you?!

If you haven’t checked this comic out, please do! The art is beautiful, as is most Fable related comics. And even though Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love, is not written or co-written by fables writer, Bill Willingham, it is still a great story. Chris Roberson, does a great job at telling the story and really giving us a great portrayal of Cinderella. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

Plants vs. zombies

March 2, 2010

Remember when I was raving about Plants vs. Zombies? I loooove that game. I even carved one of the characters into my pumpkin for halloween! That game took up a lot of my time for a couple of months. It is addicting! I still play it from time to time, but not as much since I completed it…twice ^_^ Well, now it’s available as an app on the iPhone. If you have an iPhone, GET IT! It costs $2.99, but it’s worth it. Definitely a great way to pass the time in a long line or during some boring lecture.

steel city con!

March 2, 2010

I am no longer a con-virgin. Me and boyface braved the snowy roads to attend the Steel City Con yesterday. I had a blast! It was just like I imagined-toys, collectibles, comics, and nerds. I spent a lot of time staring at 80s toys. I saw a lot of toys that I had when I was a kid-cabbage patch dolls, Legos, He-man dolls, Skeletor dolls, Ninja turtles! And a shit-ton of barbies!

And of course a ton of comics. I didn’t buy any comics because the ones I wanted were all in single issues and I prefer to buy them in collections, also known as Trade Paperbacks. Saw some “famous” people. Bo Duke from the Dukes of Hazzard was there and some WWE girls. And Darth Vader was there, a few storm troopers were walking around, the joker and Harley Quinn, and randomly, some pirates. *shrug*

Oh yah! Boyface and I got a caricature made. It’s of us as Link and Zelda

Glad I got to go. And hopefully there will be more in the future. I reaaaally want to go to THE con. Comic-con, San-Diego, but tickets have been sold out forever. *sigh*

Con-virgin

February 14, 2010

Hi! My name is Soph and I’m a Con virgin.
(Hi, Soph)

I have never been to a convention (con) of any kind. I’ve always wanted to, but never had anyone that was interested in going with me or I lived too far away from any of the ones I wanted to attend (looking at you Blizz-con and Comic-Con)! Well, I’m happy to say I have found a Con near me! Steel City Con in Pittsburgh will be held at the end of the month.

It’s a 3 day event, but I think I’ll just attend one day. I’m excited!!! Any tips for a Con virgin? Are there some official no-no’s? you know like wearing a Radiohead shirt to a Radiohead concert? Let me know!

surprise!

February 14, 2010

Today the boyfriend said he had a surprise for me. While we were driving to “the surprise”, I guessed a million things that it could be.

“Is there a carnival in town or something?” no
“Are we going to have a sundae at the diner?” no
“Are we going to pick up my friend from the airport, because you knew I missed her and decided to fly her in from Australia!?” no
“Is it a giant hello kitty made out of snow?!?!” NO!

There were other ridiculous guesses, including the correct one, “Are you taking me to a comic book store that you discovered?!”

While listening to the radio today, he heard an advertisement for it and KNEW I would love to take a visit there and pick up some things. Lovely and perfect surprise. It was a cute little shop filled with figurines, Warhammer stuff, cards, the usual comic book store stuff. While they had a HUGE catalogue of older comics I wasn’t impressed with their variety of current ones. I wanted to start reading a new series, but couldn’t find any first issue of any of the ones I was interested in! *waaaah* I did find some series that I’m interested in reading.

The first is Strange. A new series by Mark Waid about an old school Marvel character, Doctor Strange. I’m not too familiar with him, but maybe this new mini-series will inspire me to read some older comics he starred in or at least do some research on the guy. The mini-series tells the story of him adjusting to life now that he’s no longer the Sorcerer Supreme, a title he previously held. However, he still manages to protect the citizens from the evil of the world. The shop only had issues #3 and #4, so I typed the name in to my iphone as a reminder to research it more later. And After researching I’m REALLY interested in reading it and will probably purchase the TPB of the series when it’s available for release.

The others are Daytripper and Lucifer.

Hello

February 12, 2010

This is sort of an introductory post of sorts. I’m Sophia, the writer of this blog. I decided to create this blog because as the title states, I HEART COMICS! I’ve had a love of comics since I was a little girl. I used to collect the Sonic series and all of it’s spinoffs , I loved reading The X-Men comics and playing the games based from them, and  of course I adored watching the animated series of comics such as batman, spiderman, etc. I even had a Super Woman undershirt/panty set! As I grew older, my tastes grew (and my ass, so I can’t fit into my SuperWoman undies anymore >.< ). I started collecting Manga, graphic novels, and even writing/doodling my own (crappy) comics with my friends. Instead of bombarding my personal blog, onepercentofone, with comic book posts, I decided to create a special place where I can yap about the latest Fable issue, spam it with comic book inspired clothing, video games, tv, and other geeky things! I’m really excited about this blog and I hope you enjoy reading it, because I know I will enjoy writing it!
